3000/341 front. J.-C. - Pharaonic Egypt.
332/30 front. J.-C. - Alexandre and Ptolémée.
30 front. J.-C./638 ap. J.-C. - Roman Colonization.
From 640 - Moslem period.
1250/1517 - The military caste of the Mamelukes dominates the country.
1517/1805 - The country becomes an Othoman province, controlled by pashas.
1798-1801 - The French troops ordered by Bonaparte occupies Egypt.
1805/1848 - Méhémet-Ali is declared pasha with life.
1869 - Inauguration of Suez Canal.
1881 - The country is dominated and controlled by the English.
1922 - Discovered tomb of Toutankhamon in the Valley of the Kings.
1952 - Coup d'etat of a group of young officers carried out by Gamal Abdel Nasser. The English occupant accepts the accomplished fact and Farouk, king marionette, leave the country.
1953 - Proclamation of the Republic.
1956 - Colonel Nasser reaches the capacity. Nationalization of the grounds and massive departure from abroad. In October, crisis of Suez Canal enters Egypt, France and Great Britain.
1967 - Israel attacks by surprised Egypt and tiny room with nothing its aviation (war of the Six-Jours).
1970 - Death of Naser which is replaced by Anouar el-Sadate.
1973 - The Egyptian army benefits from the festival of Yom Kippour to launch an attack against Israel.
1977 - Sadate goes to Jerusalem.
1979 - Signature of the Camp David agreements. Egypt recognizes the Hebrew state and Israel agrees to leave the Sinai.
1981 - Assassination of Sadate during a military procession by a Moslem extremist. The vice-president, Hosni Mubarak, succeed to him.
1989 - Egypt reinstates the Arab League.
1997 - Attack of Louxor which makes 62 dead including 58 tourists. Unanimous judgment of the political community, including the party of the Moslem Brothers.
1999 - After more than 4 years of secret held excavations, the higher Council of Antiquities announces the discovery of a necropolis containing more than 200 mummies in the oasis of Bahareya, in the Egyptian Western desert. Hosni Mubarak is re-elected with the presidential election.
2000 - Convened in Cairo in October, the extraordinary top of the Arab League is interdependent of Palestinian rising, but the Egyptian government avoids any rupture with the Hebrew State. Egypt thus keeps its role of actor privileged in the hope of peace in the Middle East.
2001 - Failure of the negotiations of Sheba (the Sinai), prolongation of the top of Camp David (be 2000) between Arafat, Barak and Clinton. Egypt loses its role of mediator of the israélo-Palestinian process of peace.
2002 - Inauguration of the new Library of Alexandria, fourteen years after the beginning of the construction of this gigantic cultural project.
2003 - March the 20 and 21, force demonstrations in Cairo against the war in Iraq.
