The cello is larger than the violin and the viola, and so needs to be held bettween the musicians knees.

Its four strings are tuned an octave lower than the viola.

Before the ninettenth century, the cello was considered as a background instrument, which used to play the lower voice. But finally, it was added an adjustable end pin, which gave the player considerable freedom of movement.
