In 2000, three fashion designers were nominees : Jean-Paul Gaultier, Jil Sander and Miuccia Prada. Jean-Paul Gaultier has finally won the price.
Jean-Paul Gaultier was born on the 24th of April, 1952, in Arcueil near Paris. He started drawing models instead of going to school. He entered Pierre Cardin’s team at th age of eighteen and then, he founded his own brand in 1978. It was first a clothes brand, but Jean-Paul Gaultier also makes perfumes since 1992.
Jean-Paul Gaultier started working for Pierre Cardin in 1970, and he stayed 2 years. Then, he entered Jacques Esterel and Jean Patou’s teams, but he finally came back, in 1974, at Pierre Cardin’s team.
In 1977, Jean-Paul Gaultier made his entrance in the fashion’s world, and his first women’s winter collection has straightaway been conspicuous : his style was born.
Jean-Paul Gaultier likes blending all sorts of styles : he is himself original. His nickname is “the terrible child of the French fashion”.
This fashion designer likes to revolutionize the fashion, by salvaging tins or old cars and making jewels with it. He also made the dress-bodice in 1982 and the men’skirt in 1984. His collections has names like “Black Beauties”, “Russians”, “Rock-Stars”, which give information about them.
There is a children collection : Junior Gaultier, since 1988, and since 1994, more and more shops open in the whole world.
Jean-Paul Gaultier is, among others, Madonna’s fashion designer, and he made the costums for the movie “The Fifth Element” of Luc Besson, and for the choregraph Régine Chopinot.
His first perfume was “Jean-Paul Gaultier Classique”, and it was born in 1992. Then, in 1995, there has been “Le Mâle”, “Fragile” in 1998, and “Gaultier²” in 2005.
In 2003, Jean-Paul Gaultier did a range of beauty products for men.
