 YEAR 2001

In 2001, there were three nominees for the price of the fashion designer of the year : Nicolas Ghesquière, Alexander Mc Queen and Karl Lagerfeld. Nicolas Ghesquière has won.
Nicolas Ghesquière is a fashion designer who worked, and who works, for Balenciaga. He started working for this house in 1997, at the age of 26. Before, when he was 19, he was the personal assistant of Jean-Paul Gaultier.
Nicolas Ghesquière was born on the 9th of May, 1971 in Loudon, in the north of France. He never went to a fashion designer’school : he only did an internship at Agnès B., at the age of 15, and drew futuristic models. Then, he has been assistant of Jean-Paul Gaultier in 1989, stitch designer under Thierry Mugler, and Designer for Trussardi.
During the years 1995-1997, he became colleague for Balenciaga, and then artistic director. His first shows has success : the New York Times, the Independant and the Herald Tribune wrote many congratulations about him. Nicolas Ghesquière has managed to put back on its feets Balenciaga’s house, thanks to his talent. He is inspired by the cinema, the science-fiction, inflenced by the sport.
In 1998, for the Golden Globes’ ceremony, Madonna wore a Balenciaga’s dress ; Françoise Hardy and Asia Argento love his clothes ; and many actress also wear his creations : Kate Moss, the Olsen twins, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Nicole Kidman, Isabelle Huppert, Joana Preiss, ...
In 2003, a Balenciaga’store open in New-York.
In 2006, Nicolas Ghesquiere took part in an exhibition in the art gallery of the Fashion and textile in Paris.
Nicolas Ghesquière has won the title of Fashion Designer of the Year by the C.F.D.A. in 2001. But he already had the title of Avant Garde Designer of the Year, given by Vogue and VH1, the year before. At least, in 2007, Nicolas Ghesquiere received the title of Knight of the Order of the Arts and Letters.
